Globe University-Madison West Celebrates National Veterinary Technician Week

October 14-20, marks the 20th National Veterinary Technician Week.  This year’s theme is “we’re TECH savvy Technicians Educators Caregivers Healers” and for Globe University-Madison West, we are proud of our students who working toward becoming successful veterinary technicians and our instructors who teach in our veterinary technology program.

There is no doubt that veterinary technicians are a crucial part of veterinary practice. Veterinary Technicians duties include:

• Administer intravenous medications
• Assist in examinations or surgeries
• Collect blood and urine samples
• Perform lab tests
• Communicate with clients
• Provide care to sick or injured animals
• Take and process radiographs.
• And more

Katie Olson, program chair of the veterinary technology program said, “Technicians are an integral part of the veterinary healthcare team and celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week gives them the credit they deserve.  Our students are on their way their way to providing a tremendous service to the pets and families in our community.”

Globe University-Madison West Campus Director, Brock Vander Velden added, “I commend all of our students on their hard work in the classroom as they prepare to be veterinary technicians. What they do in the community for pets, pet owners and animals are inspiring and we applaud you during National Veterinary Technician Week.”

Students who are working towards their veterinary technology degree are ambitious, dedicated and go above and beyond in their education at Globe University. 

• Since the campus opened in July 2009, Globe University-Madison West has graduated 36 students in the Veterinary Technology program.
• Currently, Globe University-Madison West has 51 students enrolled in the veterinary technology program.
• Veterinary Technology students Amanda Smith and Cody Corran served as the graduate speakers during Globe University-Madison West graduation ceremonies.
• Recent Globe University-Madison West Veterinary Technology graduate, Janean Boss was awarded a WVTA Scholarship which serves to aid in early professional development.

Students working towards their veterinary technology degree at Globe University-Madison West showed their “We Care” attitude by participating in various volunteer projects, community outreach events and fundraisers.

* Students volunteered countless hours assisting during spay days on campus for Friends of Ferals.
* Volunteered at “Dog Day at the Park” during a Madison Mallards game at the Duck Pond.     Students communicated with pet owners during the game on the importance of protecting  pets from excessive heat.
* SCNAVTA, Globe University-Madison West’s vet tech student org raised $400 which was donated to the Green and Dodge County Humane Society.
* Students and faculty organized a vet tech open house on campus to the public which provided community outreach and education. The event included a demonstration from the Wisconsin State Patrol’s drug sniffing dog team.

As we look back at all of our vet tech student’s efforts we also celebrate what is to come. We welcome current and future students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their thoughts on what inspired them to want to become a vet tech.
