Feeling Hot?

The Sioux Empire Fair is fast approaching which is very exciting however the heat and temperatures outside have made any outdoor activity a challenge. With this fun event coming up Amy, our Medical Assistant Program Chair thought it would be a helpful idea to share some tips to help stay safe in this heat.

Sun Safety- Limit your time spent outside. The sun is at its strongest between 10am and 2pm. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and make sure to reapply every two hours.

Heat Safety- Know and be aware of signs of heatstroke and exhaustion. Symptoms can include: fatigue, confusion, extreme thirst, cramping, dizziness, and /or nausea. Drink water, and lots of water. Water helps to replace salt and minerals. Wear lightweight and light colored clothing. Pace yourself outdoors and seek shade when available.

Please do not leave children or pets in cars. Heat inside vehicles is very intense.

With the heat wave that we have been experiencing in Sioux Falls, it is a good idea to be prepared and know the risk of exposure to heat and sun and hope for some rain.

If you are at the fair and looking for fun events for children, stop by the safety tent hosted by the South Dakota Emergency Medical Services for Children. The safety tent offers prizes and safety information for children.
