“Pets and Vets Need Techs” is the National Association of Veterinary Technicians of America’s (NAVTA) motto for the 2011 National Vet Tech Week! It’s true; pets and vets do need techs! Globe University-La Crosse is proud to support and recognize the importance of vet techs.

Nancy Unnasch, Vet Tech Instructor at Globe University-La Crosse, explains that National Veterinary Technician week was established by NAVTA to “recognize the work that vet techs do for animals and for the public education they provide in working in clinics, zoos, labs, and in multiple animal care organizations.”

Vet techs are caretakers of pets and of humans too! “Vet techs are the first and foremost people to share the education of preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases to people,” Unnasch explained. “They’re essential for client and public education to reduce the spread of disease.”

Many students at Globe University-La Crosse pursue their education in the Veterinary Technician program. To be a successful vet tech, a student should possess a strong education, in addition to being “understanding, caring, compassionate, and professional,” Unnasch shared. Vet techs “need to be well read and spoken. They must keep current in the medical field. There are always constant changes to medicine.”

Unnasch said that one of the most important qualities for a vet tech to possess is a passion for animals. “In order to reach the maximum number of animals, it is essential to educate people. You must be passionate about animal education because it’s the only way to get other people to listen to you.”

Globe University-La Crosse is proud of the talented faculty that teach in the Veterinary Technician program. Through their instruction, guidance, and support, Globe University trains and graduates successful veterinary technicians to work in our communities. This week, we recognize the contributions of the Veterinary Technicians in our faculty and our Veterinary Technician alumni! NAVTA couldn’t be more right, “Pets and vets need techs”!

Great to see Nancy as an instructor. If all vet techs were as good as Nancy, no one would be afraid to leave their “baby” in their care! Nancy was by far the best vet tech my pets have ever had. Her students are fortunate to have her leadership and knowledge! Way to go, Nancy!!!
